The Work I Do
In a Nutshell
Loss, hurt, shock or terror,
“Can’t bear it any more”
(interesting phrase since bears do tend to carry a lot of weight around).
We squirrel away a nutshell filled with pain,
offer it up to the Gods of mercy
and replace it with diffuse numbness.
Sensation becomes complicated
by thoughts, all consuming – how to find safety
which often seems inaccessible.
We are alive but dis-spirited.
Spirit evaporates with the severance
of connection and support.
We cannot thrive estranged from hope.
We are pack animals.
Being in this world we need – no, require – deep connection with Self and Other,
be that a bird, God, sister, or a stormy sea.
Connection. How is it, where is it in my body ?
feel it smell it taste it hear it see it
There, yes ! there. I sense something other than pain,
know this thing intimately.
In this moment
I can Be.
It is safe to feel
alive again.
